ABC News’ recently aired a segment featuring Colton Burpo, son of Pastor Todd Burpo – the author of “Heaven is For Real” after famous scientist, Stephen Hawking was recently quoted as saying, “There is no heaven. … That is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” Video is here: http://bit.ly/iPjMeT

Back in January, I had the privilege of reconnecting and interviewing one of my former students, Gene Lyfe Garver, here on stevansheets.com about what he’s been up to and where God is continuing to lead him.

Since then, Gene has continued to release new music every few weeks. I am continuously impressed with what he is creating.

My favorite tracks from this new mix tape are #11, “My Mind” and #12, “With Love”.

Keep up the great work, Gene! Love you man.

The engineering students at the University of Maryland are my latest heroes. How I wish I could be there for their maiden voyage this week as they attempt to win the Sikorsky Prize which has been offered by the American Helicopter Society since 1980 without a winner.

The requirements to win the $250,000 prize:
Hover for 1-minute
Reach a height of 3-meters (10 feet)
Remain in a 10-meter box from lift off

The pilot for the test flight will be University of Maryland grad student, Judy Wexler. With a female pilot, if the team successfully flies their helicopter, they will also receive the world record for the first human-powered helicopter piloted by a female!

The aircraft itself is HUGE – nearly 1/3 the size of a football field and yet engineered to weight about 100-pounds. The video quotes a finish-weight of nearly 140lbs, but they have managed to decrease it to around 100!

I will be following this story to see how their maiden voyage turns out. The first full flight attempt will be TOMORROW, May 11th, and they are planning to live-stream the event here starting at 9AM EDT.

Here is a well-produced video explaining the project and their goal in wining the Sikorsky Prize:

What is mind blowing about this whole thing is that the team of engineers have ONLY been working on this project for 2-years. More information on the project, the team, and the details of the initial flight can be found here.

On April 27th, a horrible string of storms brought incredible tornadoes to and through Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The images and videos of the tornadoes and the resulting damage have been nothing short of horrific. More than 300 men, women, and children lost their lives as a result of those storms in that area.

Through the wonders of Twitter and Facebook, I have been able to watch pastor-friends of mine respond to the needs on the ground there in Tuscaloosa nearly instantaneously. Following @WetPaste (Wes Pate) and @scottmoore80 (Scott Moore) has helped been helpful to me to know how to pray and update those around me on the needs from the area.

Today the Wesleyan Church released a video interview with the pastor and wife from Tuscaloosa’s First Wesleyan Church, Rev. Joel & Tracy Gorveatte where they update us on what the relief efforts look like as well as the large-scale ramifications of a tragedy such as this:

The Wesleyan Church has also established The Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund to direct funds to the heart of Tuscaloosa through our church there to support the relief efforts that are most needed. Online giving is available through this link.

I am so proud of our sister-church there in Tuscaloosa that is able and willing to be a central hub in the relief-efforts there in their community. They truly are being the hands and feet of Christ in Tuscaloosa.

More information about the needs of the relief effort can be found on on Tuscaloosa First Wesleyan’s website here.

More information on our Wesleyan Church denominational response to the tragedy is here.

Talk about creative… If I were a train-buff something like this would probably instantly go on my to-do list. Maybe my son Ezra will continue to love trains and this could be something I build with him one day!

Looks like this guy used an IKEA LIATORP Coffee table ($279 retail) and an N-Scale train set (found one on Amazon for about $50)
Can you imagine how great of a conversation-piece this would be in your living room, rec-room, or even church-office?! I love it.
