Archives For Ministry

Today, for the second-Saturday in a row, I joined with our church-staff in going door-to-door hanging door-hangers in two neighborhoods. Jess and Ella have both joined me each weekend and we’ve enjoyed making it a family-occasion. The door hanger is a means to tell people about our church, but we’ve also added another aspect to our door-hanging outings. If, by chance, we happen upon someone working the yard, tinkering on a car or just enjoying their front porch we’re attempting to engage them in conversation and ask them three crucial questions that we debrief on as a staff during lunch.
The questions:
01. “What would you say is the greatest need in our community?”
02. “Why do you think more people don’t attend church regularly?”
03. “Is there any event, program, or service we could offer at our church that might bring you through our doors?”

So far, the conversations have been great!

I designed the door-hanger, too. What’dya think?

Wow, what a week!

Emceeing a week of VBS is quite exhausting as some of you know well yourselves. I had a blast!

Tonight one group raised $115 for the offering meaning that I would fall victim to 23 water balloons at the close of the evening. Those 23 hit their mark very well tonight and I was left cold and wet.

In all, the kids raised over $500 this week for Nicaragua! That’s a new record for our church’s VBS offering!

Tonight’s “special guest” brought some interesting reptiles that the kids LOVED!

Most exciting, tonight, at least 2 kids made first-time commitments to Jesus Christ with their small-group leader! I had the opportunity to pray with both of them just moments after they made that decision! What a privilege!

Pictures from our wonderful Amazon Expedition VBS are here: DAY 1 | DAY 2 | DAY 3 | DAY 4 | DAY 5

After being pelted with 10 water balloons tonight (yes, one group raised over $50 for their offering tonight!) I was able to enjoy some fine moments with “Rose” the boa.

I didn’t die.

VBS

8.4.2008 — Leave a comment

Last night we began our 5-night VBS here at Our Savior’s Wesleyan.

61-kids showed up for the first night. With VBS-staff and parents who stuck-around, we had over 100 people gathered to enjoy this year’s “Amazon Expedition”-themed vacation Bible school.

All week I am playing the part of “Stevan” (unique, isn’t it?) an Amazon River Guide who is, of all things, scared of the water. I have a canoe and mini-camp setup on the stage and carry my trusted paddle with me wherever I go. Each night, the group with the most offering collected (offering goes to Nicaragua) will get to throw water balloons at me – made a bigger deal because I’m “scared” of the water. I get to introduce our guests each night as well as challenge students in their Scripture memory and introduce a different Amazon-animal fact each night.

VBS always messes up the weekly-routine, but the fruits of the work our church puts in are always worth the effort!

Just came across this video and thought I’d share it here for those who haven’t seen it and may be interested:
