The Sheets’ camera is officially BROKEN!

3.11.2007 — 9 Comments

Tonight, 25 of us enjoyed a bowling outing for SNAC (Sunday Night After Church). We just got home at around 10PM and I quickly downloaded the pictures and here’s what they all turned out like:

That’s right, Stevan’s “other baby”, his Olympus 770 Ultra-Zoom, is officially “dead”. It won’t even take pictures anymore. Halfway through the night it would only allow me to turn it on to the video-mode setting. Each video is corrupted, too!

What does this mean?

Well, it means no more pictures or videos until we invest in another camera. For our family this is one of those unexpected purchases that we haven’t planned on. We’re going to be praying about this one!

In the mean time maybe we’ll make use of the youth group camera (the one with the broken screen after its Haiti voyage!)

Here’s what we need from the stevansheets.com readership:

A comment-based review of YOUR digital cameras! Give us your make/model/mega-pixel/zoom-capabilities/etc. Tell us how you like it, how long you’ve had it and if you’d suggest it as our next family-camera!

Can you help us?

  1. Kodak DX6490 (comparable to Kodak’s “Z series” cameras) – Not a terrible camera. Takes great pictures, and even at only 4 megapixels makes great 8X10 prints at 300ppi. The downside is the big zoom means it’s an unusual shape, which means no stuffing it in a pocket when you’re on the run.

However, I’ve been following a lot of professional photographers’ websites recently, and Ken Rockwell has tons of info on what cheap cameras he recommends. Here’s the link to his camera buyer’s guide:

He’s got massive amounts of great resources for those of us who are photo-oriented.

  2. Steph and I have a Canon Powershot A520. I have found that this camera is very durable, I have dropped, accidentally hit it on some rocks while hiking. In other words it has been through the gauntlet with us. It was a reasonable price if I remember correctly somewhere around $200 for 4 mpg. Down side is the video setting is disappointing at best you can only take videos for 30 secs on hi-res. Also it is not a battery pack but rather 2-AA’s, we have the 15 minute charge batteries and those work quite well with us. Here is a link to a website that did a review. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona520/

  3. Hey man… We got the Sony Cybershot something something.. But it was at Walmart for under$200 US and had the lithium-ion battery or whatever, it’s got great battery life, nice features and is 6 MP… a great deal I’ve seen about 4 people with them here and we all love it, plus it’s small…
    good luck man..

  4. Oh, I’m sorry!!! I am sure with a little one that is really frustrating…. what a bad day at the Sheets house…. the camera is broken, and Rob and Amber got kicked off The Amazing Race. Boo-hiss. Would it be possible to fix the one that you have?

We have a 6-year old Olympus and have loved it, but I won’t even put the stats down here since it’s so out of date! HA!

  5. why dont u have a warranty?

  6. Keep checking on http://www.wwot.com and http://www.overstock.com. We bought 2 diigtal cameras (one wa a gift) and a videocamera from Woot. Both sites always have great prices.

Rachel & Dugan have the Kodak Easy Share V570. They like it. I think this is one I sent you info on awhile back.

I can relate, we just had both our still and video camera’s stolen. I tend to go with Sony, but reccomendation is this…purchase any electronic equipment at Best Buy. No one can match their 4 year warranty. 6 years ago I bought a camera in Muncie and a few years later it broke. So Best Buy totally replaced the broken camera with a brand new one equal to the original priceI paid for the old one. The warranty might cost you around $50-$100 but it is totally worth it. Good Luck!

I am so sorry to hear about the camera. We love the Canon Powershot A540 [so does Ella.]
    we’ll be praying for funds.
