Haiti – t-minus 3-weeks!

1.8.2007 — 4 Comments

In just a few short weeks, I will be headed to Haiti with 6 others from Warsaw for a week-long Mission trip.

I am very excited about this trip as it nears, though I can admit some hesitation and nervousness.

I am NOT looking forward to being away from my family for those 9-days, nor am I looking forward to most of the unknowns about the situations we will no-doubt find ourselves in.

I just purchased 10 digital-8mm tapes to be sure and document as best as I can the trip. My goal for this trip is to capture those moments that will best describe our time in Haiti and purposefully ignite a passion within our church and community to continue to support our “adopted” Haiti mission field.

Have any avid stevansheets.com-ers been to Haiti in the past? Any advice? Any words of encouragement?

  1. Watch out for the Haitian sensation! It hits like a ton of bricks in the middle of the night. Make sure you take Imodium AD (lots of it)! Also, take some energy bars and drink packs (to mix in bottled water) when these times come.

Also, bring bottled water when going from Miami to Port-au-Prince and to your final destination. You won’t be able to drink the water on your way, so make sure you have some until you get to wherever you’re going (that is, if they have clean water there).

Be flexible and go with the flow.

    Have a blast!

I diddo what Glen said. I was hit with the Haitian sensation while in Haiti on a missions trip. (whoa,33 yrs. ago !!!) Take your own stash of Immodium etc.. and drink bottled water.
The missions trip I went on was life changing for me in great ways, other than the Haitian sensation. We were able to attend a few Haitian Baptismal services, which put our worshipping God in the U.S. to shame. Also, I loved all the little children who gathered around me wherever we went. They were so eager to know more about God. The bus ride in the mountains was very scarry. Haitians are crazy drivers!!!!

Oh, and Stevan, we will be sure to take care of Ella and Jessica while you are gone.

I know this trip will be a blessing to you. We will be praying for you and the team from Warsaw Wesleyan.

    Love, Mom Garrett

  4. We call it “Haitian Hapiness” but it is what your other commentors refer to as Haitian sensation … our advice is to be sure and enjoy the spirit of the people … the surroundings can get you down, but the joy of the people is uplifting. And, yes be careful on the roads, there seems to be no fear of death for most drivers.
