I’m in the market for a new notebook computer.

10.27.2006 — 14 Comments

I bought my current HP laptop on January 14, 2004. It’s served me very well, but is finally begging me to be “put to rest” (or put on eBay). I haven’t been able to charge the battery from the power cord for almost 2-years, the hard drive is making some insane noises, and as we all know, computer technology has sure changed in almost 3-years that I’ve owned this machine.

So I’m looking at this guy:

Specs here.

It would be QUITE the upgrade from the current notebook’s specs, but I want some stevansheets.com readership input. (Kory, this doesn’t mean you need to remind me that macs are better…)

I know there are stevansheets.com readers that I don’t even know who may have an opinion on me purchasing another HP notebook – and I want to hear from any and all who may have an opinion.

A couple things I want to be sure and do with my new notebook:
– use as my primary computer (my portable desktop machine)
– use MediaShout (and be able use it well)
– get into MORE video editing (ie. purchase AfterEffects and start playing)
– store my music library

So, what do you think? Please share your thoughts.

  1. Buy a mac. You’ll never go back. Especially if you’re doing video and media!

  2. so brother – why not a mac? Don’t the comercials make your decision for you?? i mean honestly – if indeed they are better – why dont u want to get one? i think u should get a mac. and not b/c everyone else thinks so – but b/c i like the comercials! :)

i want a mere cat for Christmas.

  3. You might think about waiting long enough to get it with Vista. If you wait until January or so, you’ll get the new OS for a lot cheaper than an upgrade. I’ve been very fond of my Compaq though, and they’re owned by HP. So no problems there.

  4. I almost forgot.

I’d seriously consider getting a dedicated graphics card if you’re going to run Media Shout. 1G of ram is probably enough, but that graphics card will make a ton of difference, especially if you want to use moving backgrounds (and who doesn’t)

  5. Not a mac? Really? You do know you can buy http://www.paralells.com now to run windows natively in a window on the mac os right? Best of both worlds. Use all the windows stuff you used to, and use all the new mac stuff to upgrade yourself.

If not a mac, definitely not an HP. Go with Dell. You’ll get a better deal, and you will avoid the possibility of not having support for it later with HP in the legal news and all lately.

And don’t worry. The dell battery explosion thing was all Sony batteries.

  6. If you’re going to go for the one you listed above, don’t buy it at WalMart. I would go with Best Buy, because their return policy can’t be beat. However, you know me, I would buy a mac (just had to put that in there).

  7. My Dell works Well.

  8. It looks like Mac wins!!!! Steve is buying me one, he just doesn’t know it yet!

  9. Did you know…..
there is a strange phenomenon that happens when i place a call to an overly-busy family member and am then dismissed for an unknown future unbusy moment…. the phenomenon is that the blower-offer has been known to wake up with HORRIBLE headaches and even a time or two it has been accompanied by a good chunk tossing session!!!!!

    Just kidding.

I hope you’re feeling better. mom told me about ur thankyou call to dad. to bad i skipped that curse.

Maybe not Sherilyn, you are not yet as old as bro and not yet married with a teething child and pressure of a job with teens! I PRAY though, that you DON’T get those dreaded aches that your dear daddy has! He got them from his dear father, and who knows where he got them from?

I am so thankful I don’t have them, but my mother did in her younger years of our growing up!

It never looks like a bit of fun!

    Love,
    Momma

Oh, I say wait until the one you have dies, and then run to somewhere that Ella enjoys going, and seee what she may choose to buy, it will be what she points to! She is soooooo intelligent…more than any friend you have! I at least think so!

    GREAT idea Sally!

    Thank you!

  12. Just my 2 cents…

I’ll 2nd (or is that 5th?) the Mac. I use one – almost – exclusively for work and for speed and reliability, it can’t be beat – ESPECIALLY when dealing with graphics and video.

Macs do have their quirks though, and Vista looks promising (I’ve played around with the beta) – and, honestly, when I went out last year and got a new home computer, what’d I get? An HP. :)

Just go with your gut. HP has been pretty good for me, although the hard-drive died about 6 months into it and I had to send the whole thing in just to get a new one, but their support was good.

    Good luck!

Don’t do Dell – Jim has worked fixing too many of them. We think they spend their money on cool marketing, and the quality of their machines have “suffered.”

  14. Heck, I’m sold. I’M getting a Mac!
