MOVIE REVIEW: Napoleon Dynamite

1.2.2005 — 5 Comments

Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, and starring John Heder had me intrigued since the first preview I saw on television a BUNCH of months ago.

When I was sick with the flu, I asked Jess to get this DVD for me because I knew it would make me feel better. Apparently she couldn’t find it. Bummer.

When I got better, it was one of the first things I picked up! This was the OTHER movie we got to watch during our New Year’s Eve party at the Helfrich’s. I was hoping that it was as funny as I had been told!

It was!

The movie is really a glimpse into most 20-something’s growing-up years. Honestly! From Napoleon wearing snowboots everyday, to the drawings he made in his Trapper-Keeper, everyone has something they can either relate to personally or remember about someone else they grew up with!

I honestly laughed more during this movie than any movie I’ve seen in a long time.

The DVD extras are just enough to entice, but I wish there were more.

It was interesting to note Napoleon wearing a Rick’s College t-shirt in part of the movie, realizing that I had been to Rick’s a few times while living in Yellowstone back in 2001. Rick’s is now “Brigham Young University – Idaho”. It was also interesting to note that the director, writers, and John Heder (Napoleon) all attend or attended Brigham Young University! In an article I just read, I found out that John Heder even did his Mormon Mission in Tokyo, Japan!

This movie rocks in so many ways…glad you found it…

I was also very glad to see our own alma mater show it at the Globe Theater. Woohoo to intelligently (?) written comedy…rated PG!
