Thankfully, I didn’t know that Saint by Ted Dekker was the second in a series!

I picked up Saint at a local discount store for under $5 after reading the author’s name and remembering that I enjoyed Dekker’s collaboration with Peretti and another novel, Thr3e.

Like the previous works, this, too, was a quick-and-exciting read. I don’t think I was hindered having not read the previous book in the series and I hope to be able to pick that book up one day and catch the back-story to this great novel.

The story follows somewhat of a Jason Bourne movie-esque adventure. There’s plenty of Spiritual under-and-over-tones to keep things “Christian”, but I would NOT label this book necessarily as overtly “Christian Fiction” – which I think is a good thing!

I think Authors who are Christians should be more often using their God-given talents to write good literature than they are making sure they “please” the Christian subculture. Ted Dekker seems to have filled that niche with Saint fairly well. I haven’t read any other reviews of this book, but I would assume that there is probably some talk in our subculture that this book would never fit into the Christian Fiction Canon.

Do The Right Thing by Former Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee was a GREAT book!

It covers Huckabee’s campaign, the people, the places, the commercial flights. It’s a fascinating look into the “Greenest” campaign for President that ended sadly without Huckabee being nominated as the Republican-choice for President of the United States.

Secretly I wished I’d see reference to “that nice family in Wisconsin” that Huckabee met along the campaign trail, but I enjoyed the book even without such a reference.

Huckabee lays out in his book the idea that “Doing the Right Thing” is somewhat a ‘thing of the past’ and that our Nation needs to get back to that basic idea and attitude. “Vertical Politics”, the “FairTax” and other great political positions kept the pages turning for me.

I had trouble putting this one down and was delighted that Huckabee’s political-language was still simple-enough for a non Poli-Sci-Guy like myself to enjoy and learn from!

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Mike Huckabee in the political realm. I’m looking forward to hearing, seeing, and reading much more from this fascinating politician!

Finished reading “The Deliberate Church” by Paul Alexander and Mark Dever a few months ago and haven’t taken time to express my thoughts here on the site.

The book was interesting. I picked it up somewhere and it sat on the shelf for a while until I made the effort to get through it. It took me a while because I occasionally lost interest.

The book attempts to give a clear blueprint that every aspect of local church leadership is well-defined and mandated in Scripture.

This is what intrigued me about the book and caught my interest initially, but I began to see some issues with the authors when they exclaimed that all leadership roles could only be filled by men.

I did finish the book and did learn some great ideas on running board meetings, holding leadership elections, public meetings, etc. I will keep the book on my shelf and draw from it on occasion I’m sure.

Today we confirmed that Jess is ‘about’ 13-weeks pregnant!

We were privileged to hear the baby’s heartbeat and meet a great new doctor and nurses that will become ‘friends’ through this process!

Ella is excited about becoming a sister and is leaning more towards a baby sister per her consistent answers.

Thanks, in advance, for your prayers!

2008 Christmas Setup Timelapse from navets on Vimeo.

From about 9:30 until 11:30 this morning, the Sheets household was all about Christmas-setup. We unpacked the tree, the decorations, our completely shattered Nativity scene (another casualty of the move, we think), and all the “extras”. Of course I captured the craziness on timelapse to share with you here on stevansheets.com!

Merry Christmas!
