Archives For Linkage

Not sure how legal it is (okay, I’m pretty sure I know it’s NOT legal), but maybe this is something to try to make tomorrow’s drive more interesting?

In case you missed it, yesterday was the inauguration of Barack Obama (interesting that Firefox still underlines both of those words as I type them – they haven’t made their way into the browser’s dictionary, apparently).

“Change”, apparently has come swiftly to America. One of those changes that I am drawn to was the nearly-instantly change to the whitehouse.gov website during the swearing-in of Obama!

Check out these before and after shots and then run on over to whitehouse.gov for yourself and read some of the other changes we should expect.

Guilty.

1.21.2009 — 9 Comments

I’m guilty. Guilty of reading Jess’ Women’s Day magazine. Sometimes there’s just nothing else interesting to read in the bathroom magazine rack.

Are you guilty of the same? Not necessarily reading Jess’ Women’s day, but husbands – do you read your wives’ magazines? And wives? Do you read your husbands’?

Why the confession?

I just found this article on the Woman’s Day website: 30 Super Bowl Snacks. I didn’t think I could post it without a full public confession. I now wish I could find 30 people to make those 30-dishes for our Super Bowl party! Any takers?

Our church just purchased two 10-inch LCD Photo Frames. We’re going to be putting them up in our lobby to display announcements and photos from church-life. It’s going to be splendid – I can’t wait to get them up.

I’ve been working with them a bit today and trying to “randomize” the photos & graphics has been quite cumbersome. I’m sure some higher-end models allow for a “random” slideshow, but ours simply goes in sequence according to the file name. That just ticked me off.

So, I did a little “browsing” and found a great solution. I offer it here because others may want to do the same and may find this solution very helpful!

I simply downloaded a program called, “File Renamer Basic“. It’s free, simple to use, and perfect for this application. I simply put all of the image files into a directory and pointed File Renamer Basic to that directory and after a few trial-and-error attempts managed to get each file renamed to a random number filename (our frames require a .jpg extension – this was simple to keep as the standard using this application).

It couldn’t be easier (well, if my photo frame had a “randomizer” built in, I guess that would be easier).

I now have 70+ images stored on our one photo frame and am currently watching the “random” slideshow while sitting here at the desk! I know that it may be a bit discouraging that my “random” slideshow will repeat itself exactly as it played the first time, but this is something I believer we can live with.

For what it’s worth, we bought two of these photo frames for our purposes here.

I just successfully updated Sunday’s PPT line-up of pre-service announcements from the comfort of my own home on the computer that resides in the AV booth of our church. It’s one of those things I take for granted because I do it quite often. I wonder how many others could benefit from a peek inside the toolbox of online tools I use probably every other day…

LOGMEIN (logmein.com)
Logmein.com is an incredible, FREE, online tool that I use to keep from having to go from computer-to-computer to do things that I COULD be doing from ANY computer with an Internet Connection and web-browser. Logmein gives its users the benefit of remotely-operating ANY PC or Mac that they have previously installed the software on (small, easy to download and install at logmein.com). When I log into the logmein website I am greeted with a list of the three computers that I currently have access to: the AV booth computer, the Youth Room computer, and our home’s desktop PC. I can then choose which one I want to remotely-operate and plug in that computer’s unique access code that I set up initially. I am then taken to another screen which is that computer’s desktop – the real thing. I’ve actually taken over control of that computer and can use it as if I was sitting in front of its monitor! It’s terrific! It’s super-useful now that we live 7-miles from the church and if I need to make changes to something that would otherwise have required me to jump in the van and head to the church to simply change some slides around! Logmein.com has both FREE and PAID accounts. The paid accounts allow for other useful options like remote printing and file-sharing.

DROPBOX (getdropbox.com)
Dropbox is a useful utility that allows its user to share files from on PC to another by simply installing a “My Dropbox” folder somewhere on the user’s PC or Mac. I use this tool daily to transfer files from my office laptop to the Sanctuary PC or our Youth Room’s Mac. It’s as simple as copying something to the “My Dropbox” folder on my desktop and in a short amount of time that file has been “magically” transported to the other computers I access so that I can use that file there! The free dropbox account gives users up-to 2gb of space to store and swap files – which happens to be PLENTY of space for what I need to do on a weekly basis. I am always creating new PowerPoint announcement slides on my laptop and simply copy them into the Dropbox Folder and simply insert them into our weekly PPT files on the Sanctuary PC. Dropbox has taken away the need of e-mailing files to myself simply to have them available on other computers! Dropbox is the Internet-solution to a physical 2gb thumb-drive.
