Chicken a la Carte

Warning: this video will change something inside of you.

Last night was our church’s Local Church Conference meeting. Every year, Wesleyan churches gather to “do the church’s business” in a Roberts-Rules-based meeting where we elect new officers to church positions.

I think most-people dread the “business” part of these meetings.

As a Wesleyan Pastor’s Kid and now as a Wesleyan Pastor, I have NOT grown to dread these meetings, but I get excited about the meetings – I think because of something I’m calling, “The Opportunity for Newness”.

“The Opportunity for Newness” – especially in local church ministry seems to be something that doesn’t happen enough. These annual business meetings mean that newness may very well come within the few hours that we’ve gathered. New board members, new trustees, new Sunday School superintendent, new budget being voted on.

What about you? Do you dread the “business”? How does your church do the meeting?

As a staff pastor I am required to submit an “annual report” about my areas of ministry in the last year. I am posting my completed report here for your ‘viewing enjoyment’: 2009-annual-report-of-assistant-pastor

Pastors – I’d love to see YOUR annual report – consider posting a link to it in the comments!

Sexting Phenomenon

4.21.2009 — 1 Comment

Parents and youth leaders need to stay apprised to the current trend of ‘sexting’ with students.

I just watched this interesting video from MSNBC talking about Vermont’s attempt to change laws lessening the punishment for ‘sexting” while at the same time trying to promote family-oriented-education about the subject.

I am disgusted by some of the dialogue on this clip that says students shouldn’t be held responsible for their actions. For instance, the Vermont Senator brings into question whether a student should not be allowed to go into the teaching-field due to being prosecuted for ‘sexting’ and becoming a registered sex-offender. If families (and government) continue to bail-out our students to make their decisions less-repercussive, aren’t we contributing to the failing of our society?

Here’s the clip from MSNBC:

Why is it that liberals can have their opinions about issues (gay marriage, for instance), and can shout their slogans, ideals, and attitudes from the mountain tops, but when a conservative voices his (or her, in this case) opinion, some of those same liberals get caught off-guard and slam them for their beliefs?

I saw just a quick clip this morning that something happened with Perez Hilton and one of the Miss USA contestants last night and quickly found the clips on YouTube to confirm my suspicions:

I would hope that with any such platform (ie, Miss USA contestant) a person with conservative values would be welcome to share their opinion and ethical viewpoint without cause for such a media-uproar.

I’m embarrassed at where we are as a country.
