THE SEX FORMULA

10.13.2005 — 12 Comments

We’re talking gender here, folks. Calm down.

I received a phone call this morning from my excited mother who relayed a mathematical equation to me that apparently works to tell if a baby will be a boy or a girl – atleast it works for my mother’s three children, the two children of the lady she was visiting, and a couple others that I tried it on today.

Here goes:

CONCEPTION MONTH + MOTHER’S AGE = AN ODD OR EVEN NUMBER

For instance:

My mother and father apparently conceived “mini-me” in October (the 10th month).
I was born in July, 1979 when my mom was 26.

10+26=36 (EVEN) meaning that I’m a male.

Get it? Male = EVEN; Female = ODD.

Try it. Post your results. Sure it can’t REALLY be true, but just try it and let’s check statistics.

I enjoyed playing “magician” today for Jess’ first graders at the end of the day. Good times, great mouth-dropping reactions!

Grace is Amazing

First of all, let me start this post by telling you all what a great night we had at theBOX. Hanging out was great, music was great, and I really got into the message, too. Tonight we talked about how our actions are worship. It was just a great time.

After theBOX, I even had the joy of one of my sponsors coming up to me and asking how he and his wife can be praying for me! How awesome?!

So, driving home from theBOX to get my shower and await my late-night Wendy’s meal that my wife is picking up – I called Mom & Dad. I was having a great conversation with Mom as I pulled into our duplex driveway.

Then the guy behind me turned on these red-and-blue lights.

Ugh.

Pulled over in my own parking spot! How humiliating.

When you get pulled over you atleast (maybe just me) want to have been speeding on an Interstate highway or something or atleast going like 30-over the speed limit (okay, that’s just not right, I know!) – but to get pulled over in my own driveway – that’s just sad.

So, I roll the window down, turn the car off and await my fate.

I was approached by Mr. Winona Lake Police Officer and politely told that I was driving 50+ in a 35 (the “50+” is HIS description – I’m not trying to look good or anything..) He politely asks if I have any “justification for driving over the speed limit”.

I answered with a “no” and then this explaination: “I’m just headed home after a long day and then youth group tonight – I’m a youth pastor here in town.”

He asked for my license and registration – making me believe the “pastor card” didn’t work with this guy.

He looked over my information and asked, “Where are you a youth pastor at?”

I said, “The Wesleyan Church”.

He said, “Pay more attention to your speed, sir. Good-night.”

WOWEE!

I said, “Thank you VERY much, sir.” as he walked away.

I re-aligned my car into the driveway and walked inside as if I had just been given a Million dollars.

I called Mom back and told her the good-news. She was even happy for me.

And after that whole ordeal, the story of Grace – God’s Grace continues to be in the forefront of my mind. I know it’s “over-preached”, but I sit here tonight realizing the similarities between the two stories and realize once again how UNDESERVING I really am of #1 – getting let out of receiving a ticket – and #2 getting the free gift of Salvation.

I hate taking my Salvation for granted and yet I probably do every single day.

Stevan: do better with that, would ya?!

Thanks for “listening”, my friends.

If you caught it, you quite possibly saw the “worlds-greatest-video” last week on Thursday here at stevansheets.com

If not, I’m giving you another chance at downloading one of the funniest video clips I’ve ever seen.

DOWNLOAD HERE (700 kb .mov)

As you probably have guessed, this video has become quite popular amongst me and my youth minstry buds. So much so that I was asked to create a t-shirt to continue the hoop-la revolving around the cute black kid and his word choices.

So I did.

And for $14.99 you can own your own piece of history! Don’t worry – I’m not making any profit off of this shirt – just wanted to make it available to the masses! My buddy Mike Hofer has already purchased one!

Link to the online store is here.

Bradley Hathaway - All The Hits So Far“All The Hits So Far” by Bradley Hathaway (RELEVANT books) was on my list of must-reads since I first saw it advertised at RELEVANTmagazine.com months ago.

I finally had a chance to pick it up this past week at the Tree of Life bookstore in Marion. When we got back to Warsaw on Saturday night, I started reading some of the included 14-poems to Jess. She stayed awake for 2 or 3 of them and I soon found myself needing to FINISH the book THAT night.

So I did.

14 poems later, I’m a fan of modern-day psalmist, Bradley Hathaway (www.thebradley.net)

The book comes with a 14-track CD in the back that includes each of the 14-poems in spoken-format by Bradley.

RELEVANT offers a free sample-chapter/poem here (.pdf).

Okay, now that the NEWS is out, I’m dealing with “what-do-I-post-about-itis”.

So, I am taking Jess’ advice and posting about something that helped Jess make it through a bad day of nausea!

Introducing: “Preggie Pops“!

“The Natural Way to Ease Morning Sickness!”

Interesting. I’m still waiting to “borrow” one for myself and see what they taste like. I’m thinking that dum-dums are the same thing, only they’ll be cheaper and easier to find!

So there, now you know about an interesting product. Jess actually received these from one of her students’ mothers who happens to attend our church and sent her daughter to school with a bunch of “baby-is-coming” stuff for us to use! How awesome is THAT?!

In “other” news, today I had a Youth Cabinet Meeting over in Ft. Wayne. We had a good time at the Seekers Coffee House planning a year’s worth of district youth events and had a great time chatting about this past weekend’s ADVANCE conference. It is such a good feeling to meet with guys that are of like-minds and like-ministries and be able to brainstorm with similar, yet different, viewpoints!

I got back in the office shortly after 4PM, just enough time to boot up the laptop, catch up on e-mail, and then head home for supper!

Accountability group became “Bible Study” tonight. We’ve decided to nix the question-asking process and get further into actual Bible reading. We’re starting with the NLT’s ONE YEAR BIBLE. We’ll be starting with October 11th’s section and read a week’s worth before our next Monday night. We’ll then come to the table with things that we’ve learned or questions we have and discuss that past week’s reading. It will be a good time and will offer a DIFFERENT-sort of accountability through the reading of God’s Word together. I’m looking forward to it! I haven’t read through the Bible since college – and even then I “browsed” some of it! (How’s that for honest?)
