Archives For October 2005

Wow, what a day!

6:30AM is A LOT earlier than I “normally” wake up on a Tuesday morning.

After a McDonalds breakfast with my beautiful, pregnant wife, it was off to school for the day!

I was given my “orders” for the day – keep track of two first-grade boys and be a good chaperone.

No problem.

It wasn’t, really. It was actually an absolute blast – I mean look at the kids in that photo (and more here, of course) and you can tell that it was a great day.

Merry Lea is some sort of 1900’s-ish restored community with buildings and such where the show us how folks lived before iPods and such! (did I really just say that?)

It was a great day – though Jess did get stung by a yellow-jacket and we weighed our options as I readied myself to stab her with her Epi-Pen.

We still haven’t had a chance to ask the Dr. what to do if Jess was stung while being pregnant, so we opted to NOT inject – and did some extra praying. Thankfully the swelling went down and besides the swelling and some pain, my wifey is healthy. I did scold the bee very harshly for stinging my pregnant wife.

At the end of the day I headed home and literally crashed on the couch thanking God that I work with Junior and Senior-Highers each week instead of 20+ first-graders! It was a GREAT experience being a chaperone and getting to know Jess’ students better throughout the day. I brushed up on my High-School Spanish by attempting to impress the Spanish girls and enjoyed speaking “pig” to the pig to impress all the boys!

It was a day to remember.

I find it interesting (sad, even?) that Indiana Wesleyan University didn’t show up in the 361 Best Colleges List by The Princeton Review.

Not just that IWU didn’t show up, but that Southern Wesleyan AND Houghton College DID!

Linkage.

From time to time, I am convinced that I will have BURNING “fatherhood questions” that I will need the answer for as soon as possible. It is during these times that I will turn to the trusty stevansheets.com readership and ask away.

That said, here’s #01:

Scenario: I’m at Wal-Mart and I’m alone with my freshly-born son/daughter. We’re shopping for “whatever” and suddenly the “I’ve got to go” urge hits me. You know the type – we’re talking EXLAX version here.

WHAT AM I TO DO?

Already thought-of options:

#1 – take son/daughter in carseat into men’s restroom and place carseat on NASTY men’s bathroom floor as I “do the business”.
#2 – (a variable of #1) – place carseat on “changing table” in the “handicap” stall as I “do the business” – therefore keeping the seat off the NASTY floor.
#3 – (this only works in a store like Wal-Mart in a city like Warsaw) find someone that I know from church or jail-ministry (joke) and ask them to watch my son/daughter as I “use the restroom”.

I’m not comfortable with EITHER option – so this is where you, stevansheets.com readers come to my rescue!

Option 1 includes placing a CLEAN carseat on a mini-hair covered, pee-stained, semi-tiled floor in a PUBLIC restroom – I can’t imagine how much cleaning I would have to do after that incident.

Option 2 involves the wishful thinking that THIS public restroom will have a changing table – and that it is INSIDE the stall that I CAN USE (empty).

Option 3 involves TRUSTING someone else ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT WITH THE LIFE OF MY CHILD!!! – I couldn’t carry a list of “pre-qualified” watchers that Jess and I work up with me wherever I go.

So, what would YOU do?

EVERYONE is welcome to give their 3-cents. (I can’t wait!)

ROAD TRIPPAGE

(“trippage” SHOULD be a real word)

In just a few days, Jess and I will embark on a 500+ mile road trip from Warsaw to Allentown, PA!

We’ll leave on Thursday, October 27th, drive to Hershey, PA – enjoy the sites and smells of that town – then spend the night at my Aunt & Uncle’s in Manheim. On Friday we’ll drive to Allentown to spend most of the day with my Miller-Grandparents! Jess hasn’t been able to meet these Grandparents yet – as they were unable to make the trip West for the wedding more than a year ago.

We’ll hopefully have time to visit with other family in the area as well as my buddy Chris Entrot (one of my groomsmen), too!

We’ll head back home on Saturday and Sunday and be back at work on Monday!

That’s what I call a FUN weekend!

A public thanks to Dave and Renee Sweeny for once again, allowing us to borrow their vehicle to make the trip!

Today, I got to ride and then DRIVE this mega-machine:

Kerry Goshert – a farmer from our church allowed me the HUGE privilege (danger?) of driving his John Deere 6620 combine one-full time around the field behind our church property!

This was one of those “wished I could FOREVER” moments that came true! Each year as they combine the field in the back of either soybeans or corn, I have wished that I could have had a chance to ride around WITH the guys!

I couldn’t believe it when I walked out there today and he said, “jump in”!

We were somewhere in the field when he said, “How adventurous do you feel today?”

It was incredible! And from what Kerry told me, I did decent, too!

Jealous?
