Archives For September 2005

Tonight’s date included the 6:30 showing of Wes Craven’s “Red Eye” (PG-13).

I would say that “Red Eye” was an entertaining movie. Definitely a “grab your neighbor’s arm” movie. I actually did find myself clenching onto Jess’ arm during one part of the movie – she let me know quite gently that I was causing her to lose feeling in that arm.

The main scene is inside of an airplane, and more-so in a two-seat section of the plane. Surprisingly, this worked! I thought for sure that it would get boring watching the same two people converse about how one was going to hurt the other – all while sitting comfortably in “coach”. Nope – not boring.

The acting was above-average and the stunts – very realistic, except (SPOILER) for the high-heal kick which actually found the high-heal STUCK in the man’s leg. I’m just not sure that could ever really happen!

All in all it was an enjoyable movie – and once again, as is our new habit, we waited till the last credit before leaving our seats.

Definitely some bad language in the movie, though I’m not sure exactly how much. Obviously there is violence as well, but surprisingly not as much as I had thought there would be.

Warning: do NOT watch this movie if you have heart trouble or if you need to use the bathroom very badly.

Friday!

After a couple hours of work this morning in the office, I headed to Ft. Wayne for a hospital visit. After the visit, I did some Sam’s Club shopping and then had a late-lunch at the Anchor Room Cafe – a Christian bookstore North of town.

The trip home was quite miserable as it warmed up considerably and, if you remember, I have no air conditioning.

When I got back into town, I immediately stopped at Enterprise Rent-a-Car and booked a compact-car for next week’s trip to Grand Rapids. Today was my “let’s see if I could make it without air conditioning” test. I can’t.

I got a crazy deal, though, so I’m pretty happy with that!

Date night tonight. Goshen, here we come.

Katrina

Last night I stayed up and watched two news programs completely devoted to the devastation surrounding the Katrina aftermath.

I’m in awe at just how terrible things have become in such a short amount of time.

In a time where it would be easy to criticize the relief efforts by our own government, I want to remind those of us who are many miles away from the problem to continue to pray for those who are making decisions. I can’t imagine the stress levels of those in charge right now.

Jess and I just finished, “The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe” on DVD after receiving it in the mail this afternoon.

First impression – 2 hours and 11 minutes of BBC-tv acting is TOO LONG. I can hardly wait to see the 2005-version that hits theaters this Christmas season.

Sure this version follows the movie pretty well, but I need more than cartoons over film to whet my “special effects appetite”.

I had originally thought that I had seen these movies growing up on PBS, but I was wrong. Nothing was familiar except that I had just read the book and could guess what the next scenes would be like.

I’m VERY hopeful that this next version coming out in a few months does better than two guys dressed up in a lion’s costume for Aslan, too!

I’m sure for 1988, this movie made-for-tv movie was ahead of its time. I’m hoping in 20 years I can say the same about the new movie coming out!

Just a reminder

Tomorrow is the release of Matthew Paul Turner’s book, “Provocative Faith“. Mr. Turner just sent me an e-mail reminding me of that fact!

Remember, I reviewed this book a while back.
