Archives For January 2005

So we’re in the middle of a Winter Storm Warning. They “say” we’re supposed to get some nasty ice and up to 8″ of snow.

They always talk about these big storms and nothing ever happens – I doubt if it’ll even get cloudy.

This afternoon Ben Thompson helped me set up the new projection screen in the gym – just to make sure we could figure it all out. The church purchased this bad-boy for our Super Bowl Party and some other up-and-coming events that will be taking place.

Check it out:

Honestly – it really is 10′ x 14.5′ – can you imagine how awesome that will be during the Super Bowl?!

I’ll also try and impress you with a fresh design – this is our Super Bowl Party poster (print size – 8.5″x14″)

nice, huh?

And finally, this evening – here is “ONE” of the “Neon-swallowing” pot-holes that Warsaw has become famous for:

You should’ve seen the traffic around me giving me that “weird look” as I photographed this evil thing.

What in the world, did Warsaw pick up and move to Seattle, Washington and no one told me about it?

It’s crazy – it has been raining cats and dogs for two-straight days now.

That is only good for one thing: big splashes when driving too close to the shoulder of the road!

Rain aside, today was a good day. Woke up early, got to work early, and got a lot of work done.

Took my buddy Nate Thompson to lunch at “the bell” today – good conversation and always makes me feel good to chill with a college student!

Right before heading home, I uncovered some tsunami footage by googling that phrase – “tsunami footage”. Incredible stuff, really. I don’t want to post links here because some of the graphic nature, so you’ll have to uncover it for yourself.

Jess made her famous “taco ring” for dinner tonight and we actually sat together at the kitchen table. I love it when our schedules allow for that!

After supper we both had our Bible studies. I headed to the Helfrich’s and Mrs. Helfrich headed here! What fun it is to be us!

Had a good time with “the boys” around the Helfrich dining room table tonight. Discussion about everything with those guys is so beneficial to my soul, I’m telling you what!

Tomorrow – another full day. And on the way to work I will once again play, “miss the potholes”. Indiana roads are TERRIBLE.

Maybe, just maybe I’ll take a picture of the pothole that nearly swallowed the Neon today!

Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, and starring John Heder had me intrigued since the first preview I saw on television a BUNCH of months ago.

When I was sick with the flu, I asked Jess to get this DVD for me because I knew it would make me feel better. Apparently she couldn’t find it. Bummer.

When I got better, it was one of the first things I picked up! This was the OTHER movie we got to watch during our New Year’s Eve party at the Helfrich’s. I was hoping that it was as funny as I had been told!

It was!

The movie is really a glimpse into most 20-something’s growing-up years. Honestly! From Napoleon wearing snowboots everyday, to the drawings he made in his Trapper-Keeper, everyone has something they can either relate to personally or remember about someone else they grew up with!

I honestly laughed more during this movie than any movie I’ve seen in a long time.

The DVD extras are just enough to entice, but I wish there were more.

It was interesting to note Napoleon wearing a Rick’s College t-shirt in part of the movie, realizing that I had been to Rick’s a few times while living in Yellowstone back in 2001. Rick’s is now “Brigham Young University – Idaho”. It was also interesting to note that the director, writers, and John Heder (Napoleon) all attend or attended Brigham Young University! In an article I just read, I found out that John Heder even did his Mormon Mission in Tokyo, Japan!

King Arthur, Directed by Antoine Fuqua, was one of our New Year’s Eve time-spenders. Jess got me this DVD for Christmas per my request. This is one that neither of us got to see in the theater, but had only heard amazing things about it. Jess actually got it in a two-pack, packaged with Pearl Harbor! What a gift!

My thoughts on the movie is that it is a worthy “epic” to own. This movie, in my opinion, ranks with some of my other favorites – Braveheart, The Patriot, and even We Were Soldiers!

The DVD that I own is the “Director’s Cut”, so there is apparently a lot more “blood & guts” than the original version, but the “sensuality scene” which we were anxiously waiting to fast-forward through was no different than the original nor was it gratuitous.

The story is obvious – King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table go on “missions” for the Roman Empire, killing bad guys and saving good guys.

I loved the idea that the “Knights” weren’t like I’ve always seen depicted – professional, armor-wearing, warriors. These knights had personality and were “rough and tough” kind of guys – each with their own “warrior-skill”.

I also enjoyed Clive Owen as King Arthur – I was VERY pleased to see Mr. Owen playing the lead roll. I am continuing to be impressed with him.

Final thought: if you haven’t rented this DVD yet, I suggest you do so. If you cringe at “real-looking” war blood & guts, take caution – there are a few decaptitations that will catch you by surprise.

Well, maybe not now that I’ve told you they’re coming!

Told you they would be here, eventually!
