Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, rated PG for thematic elements, scary situations and brief language, was not THE worst movie I have ever seen, though that’s what I said as we left the theater this weekend.
I can’t exactly explain why I disliked this movie so much, except to say that it was just NOT entertaining. Sure, Jim Carey is once again his typical character-acting self. My brother-in-law, Rich pointed out that he is ONLY this type of actor and, therefore, is probably only good at this type of acting.
The movie’s plot is intense, just not entertaining.
From Jess’ perspective, the movie followed the book that she read (#1) and therefore made the movie “good”.
I was bored throughout the entire thing.
I have to say that only by reading the book or first three books could you fully understand the film. I don’t know how I would have felt watching it without the background knowledge and expectations that I had walking into the theater. For once, you need to read the book first instead of watching the film to explain the book. Jim Carey was a perfect description of “Count Olaf.” The kids were depicted well, too. I will say that reading the book is much more enjoyable than watching the film. The author is amazing at painting a vivid picture and he keeps his readers ‘hooked’ without a problem. My fourth graders begged for me to read it last year. There wasn’t even a thought of the movie when they picked it up to read and they came back for every sequel. I know I say this about many books-turned-to-movies, but I wouldn’t watch the film again, on purpose, unless it was to discuss the similarities and differences of the film and book with a class or something. Okay, I’m done with the teacher’s perspective. :-)
I’m SO GLAD that I skipped this film and watched Ocean’s 12 this past weekend. (excellent flick!)
It was like a bad dream, with good acting and cool sets, but mostly like a bad dream that I can’t remeber in the morning…and it sucked…
on another note, the multiblogger idea is a hit on the bbb….thanks stev, Lets get that going…call me

I directed my boyfriend Chip Boswell to your site today because he had been wanting to see Lemony Snickets… He was amazed that you knew Craig Helfrich since they were childhood neighbors for 14 years in Swayzee. He says that Craig has a brother named Kevin. Is this the same guy? Small world. If it is…tell Craig that Chip says hi.

I’m with Kory – Ocean’s 12 is AMAZING! I’m glad you reviewed Lemony Snicket…I will now save my money for the dvd instead. I also hear that National Treasure is phenomenal, but haven’t had a chance to see it yet.
Let’s not forget the amazingness of Spanglish.
kind of silly to say that about Jim Carey when he is being considered for best actor Oscar for Eternal Sunshine – Leave Jim Carey alone
