Wesleyan General Conference Synopsis

6.11.2008 — 6 Comments

General Conference just ended (we’re talking minutes, not hours-ago!)

I had the privilege of having a back-row “seat” via a live-chat with my buddy Glen Robinson who pastors in West Virginia. He gave me the last few minutes in play-by-play as we discussed some of the significant things that took place at this conference.

Here’s his top-10:

1. First-female GS elected – JoAnn Lyons (President of WHI).
2. All statements on social dancing removed (page 21) from Discipline.
3. Prohibition of merchandising on the Sabbath Day (page 21) was removed and now allows for this matter to be according to “personal conviction” as referenced to in Romans 14:5-6.
4. Prohibition of the motion picture theater (page 22) was removed.
5. All community members have full-voting rights on all issues (except for voting on covenant members). In addition, community members are not allowed to serve in specified leadership positions until they become covenant members.
6. Approved position statement on global poverty.
7. Approved position statement on human trafficking (page 110).
8. Approved position statement on immigration (page 101).
9. Approved position on domestic violence (page 98).
10. USF for global funding passed.

There’s three days of Conference into 10-seconds!

  1. As a former Wesleyan and one who is all for women’s equality, I think Ms. Lyon is a very talented and capable woman.

However, I believe the Wesleyan church, after its 40 years of wandering in the desert, failed to cross Jordan!

The truth is, nothing has changed in the Wesleyan church…it is still led by power-hungry and organizationally incestuous leaders who lack integrity!

It is not a church with a bright future!

    Good synopsis!

WOW!!! After all God did come to offer each of us and to give us in forgiveness, NEW LIFE through Him! He left the Holy Spirit with us/for us! He works with our hearts/consciences – we are – for ourselves and the witness and example to others – to be walking in daily obedience!

We might be where God wants us?!?!

    Good summary!

  4. That pretty much says it all! Great synopsis!

  5. Nice summary! I would find it very helpful to have a summary of the differences in Community member and Covenant Membership requirements. For example; abstinece with alchohol, etc.

Section 440 does a great job of explaining Christian Liberty.

This liberty, however, is not to be construed as license (Gal. 5:13). Rather, love for Christ constrains the
Christian to live righteously and holily as God demands. By the Spirit of God, His laws are written on the heart (Heb. 8:10). So Christians resist evil and cleave to the good, not in order to be saved, but because they have been saved.
